Sing the Mass

posted on 25 November 2008

Most people agree on how important it is to be able to sing at Mass. But perhaps we need reminding that our aim should be not just to sing at Mass, but to sing the Mass. Music is there at the very heart of what we do in the liturgy. The priest can make a very important contribution to this by singing the dialogues he exchanges with the congregation, particularly at the most significant junctures in the Mass. These dialogues are not simply outward signs of communal celebration but foster and bring about communion between priest and people, according to the General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM 34). Many priests are already used to singing the doxology
