The President of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has exchanged warm letters with Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

“I am writing on behalf of your Roman Catholic subjects in England and Wales to express my warmest congratulations to you on your 80th birthday,” Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor wrote to the Queen on 10th April.

He said it was “good to be able to celebrate and give thanks to God with the rest of the Nation on this significant occasion.”

He added:

“I want to assure you of our prayers for you personally on 21st April, and wish you many more years of good health and happiness in the service of our Nation.”

In a handwritten response from Windsor House, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II told the Cardinal his sentiments were “much appreciated”.

“Thank you so much for your congratulations and prayers,” she wrote.
