posted on 20 April 2005 The Cardinals of the Catholic Church last night chose Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to be the new Pope. He has taken the name of Pope Benedict XVI and will be officially inaugurated in a Mass at St Peter's Basilica in Rome on Sunday. Celebrating a private Mass this morning (Wednesday 20 April) in the Sistine Chapel for the Cardinals who elected him he said, 'On one hand I have a sense of inadequacy and human turmoil at the responsibility entrusted to me yesterday... on the other hand, I feel living in me a deep gratitude to God who does not abandon his flock but guides them always.'
