Cardinal celebrates 400 years of the Company of Mary Our Lady

posted on 21 May 2007

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-OConnor was the main celebrant at a special Mass to celebrate 400 years of the Company of Mary Our Lady on Tuesday 15th May 2007.  The Mass, at Notre Dame School in Cobham, Surrey, was also attended by His Excellency Archbishop Faustino Sainz Muoz, Apostolic Nuncio, Bishop Kieran Conry and Bishop Bernard Longley.

Speaking after the Mass, the Cardinal said: I am delighted to be here, on the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Company of Mary Our Lady, and the 70th anniversary of Notre Dame School, where the Companys values of pastoral care are truly embodied.  It was a great pleasure to celebrate this occasion with the Sisters of the Company and all of the pupils of the school they serve so well.

The Company of Mary Our Lady was formed as a teaching order in 1607 by St Jeanne de Lestonnac.  They have a mission of education, focussed on the person in all their uniqueness.  Over 400 teaching centres across the world, ranging from nurseries to university colleges and hospitals, were founded by the Company, including Notre Dame Cobham in 1937.
