Resignation of Tony Blair - Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor's comments

posted on 10 May 2007

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has made the following statement today, Thursday, May 10th 2007

The role of prime minister is an extremely demanding one in todays complex society. It is not for me to comment on all of Tony Blairs policies, though one recognises the serious divisions of opinion on the war in Iraq. History will make a better judgement than today.

For my part, I want to recognise and thank Tony Blair for his dedication and whole-hearted commitment to the service of his country. In particular, I would warmly commend his efforts in securing peace in  Northern Ireland and his constant concern for the eradication of poverty in Africa.

I would like to extend my good wishes and prayers for Tony Blair, his wife Cherie and family in their future.
