Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has met with Mr. Marek Jurek, Speaker of the Polish Parliament, who is in the UK on a three day official visit.
The welfare of Polish migrants in the UK and the position of the Catholic Church in both countries were amongst the subjects discussed at the hour long meeting, which took place at Archbishop's House, London SW1. Mr. Jurek was accompanied by Ms. Barbara Tuge-Erecinska, the Polish Ambassador.
After the meeting, Mr. Jurek and Ms. Tuge-Erecinska were given a tour of Westminster Cathedral by Fr. Slawomir Witon, one of the Cathedral Chaplains.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said:' I warmly welcomed the visit of the Polish Speaker, Mr Jurek, reflecting the strong ties between our two countries. In our meeting we were able to discuss the importance of the Catholic Church in Poland and England and Wales. We also spoke about the rich heritage given by Pope John Paul and his heroic witness to the Catholic faith over so many years. I am sure our meeting will help to strengthen the spiritual and pastoral support which we would want to provide for the numerous migrants from Poland who are living and working here.'
