"The chief function of a parish is to help the community grow in holiness, so that it becomes a model, on a small scale, of what the whole church should be.
This is most likely to happen where clergy and lay people accept that
they must work closely together. In particular, the laity will be
encouraged to fulfill the vocation they have received, through Baptism
and Confirmation, to play their part in strengthening the faith of
other believers and bringing it to those who have not yet received the
gift.
Because the parish is meant to be missionary it will be inclusive and outward-looking.
It will welcome those whose contact with the parish is only
occasional. It will remember that it is part of the local diocese and
will co-operate with the bishop and with the neighbouring parishes. It
will foster relations with Christians of other denominations, with
people of other faiths and with non-believers. It will take an
interest in local affairs, especially where Christian values are
concerned. It will also be a source of help for the churches overseas."
Fr Bernard Parkin SJ
The parish is a founding member of the
North London Citizens,
a diverse alliance of active citizens and community leaders organising
for change and committed to action for the common good. It consists of
faith groups, schools, student organisations, union branches and
charities. It is part of the
London Citizens Organisation along with 7 other chapters throughout London.
