Burial of cremated remains
posted on 27 June 2008

The Archbishop’s Council has recently issued guidance regarding the burial of the ashes of Catholics whose bodies have been cremated.

At the same time the Archbishop’s Council has confirmed that new gardens of remembrance and columbaria may NOT be established in church grounds at this time.

Two leaflets can be downloaded from this web page.

The first, With faith and hope in the Resurrection: Cremation and the Church, describes the Church’s attitude to cremation and the reasons she urges the reverent burial of cremated remains. It is a leaflet that might usefully be distributed to those families who chose the option of cremation, so as to ensure that there will be reverent and appropriate burial of the cremated remains at a later date.

The second provides the Church’s simple rite for use when burying cremated remains.
