CATHOLIC EDUCATION: Last week we should have had a retiring collection for Catholic Education Services, but by oversight we missed it! This Sunday we shall have one! Pray also for our Primary and Secondary Schools. Bishop John Sherrington, chair of the Diocesan Education Board, recently wrote

"The letter from the Congregation for Catholic Education, The Catholic school, on the threshold of The Third Millennium reminds us of the fundamental characteristics of the Catholic school:

The Catholic school as a place of integral education of the human person through a clear educational project of which Christ is the foundation, its ecclesial and cultural identity; its mission of education as a work of love; its service to society.

In context of rapidly changing government policies, it is important that we continue to combine integral formation in the faith with a focus on excellent education so that each student may flourish and realise his or her true potential using God-given gifts.

At this time, some schools of the diocese are considering becoming part of a diocesan multi-academy trust, others part of geographical multi-academy trusts. Whatever new relationships arc created, it is important that schools build solidarity with others so that good practice may be shared".

LENTEN GUIDED PRAYER FOR YOUNG ADULTS .

A Time of Guided Prayer is a retreat in daily life costing a fraction of most retreats but still a wonderful opportunity to:

  • Take time out
  • Deepen your relationship with God
  • Explore new ways of praying
  • Find help with any kind of decision
  • Discover more who you really are

"A particular lesson I learnt was that there are many opportunities and ways of meeting with, conversing with, loving and cherishing God throughout the day. It leads me to a deeper encounter with Jesus through a reflection at the end of the day of how the Spirit worked in the experiences of the day and how I responded to them". REPOSITORY: Stephen and Betty Ogilby sole handily run and organise the Repository which is open for sale of religious articles at the back of the church after Sunday Mass. They would welcome volunteers to lend a helping hand in any way they can: helping to arrange articles on the sales table, maybe help with the sales or help to clear away and pack the articles away after selling is finished. Volunteers do not need to feel committed to being 'permanent' helpers. Both Stephen and Betty would welcome any help offered. So please approach them before or after Mass to lend a hand.

FROM THE PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE: As many parishioners will be aware, we are planning a major refurbishment of the Church interior, concentrating primarily on the Sanctuary. As the focus of our Mass celebrations and other liturgies, the Altar will be raised and enlarged, the Ambo (lectern), the seating in the Sanctuary as well as the Sanctuary floor will be replaced in stone compatible with the existing architecture of the Church. We will hopefully also be able to improve the appearance of the nave by removal of the carpets and restoration of the wooden areas of floor beneath them. There is no intention to make any other alterations to the appearance of the historic artwork or other aspects of the architecture of the Church. This will be the first major work within the Church itself since the repairs after the fire, and obviously requires significant amounts of financial support. Very roughly, the project is likely to cost some £150.000 if carried out soon, which is considerably more than the Parish has available in its reserves at present. To this end we intend to launch an appeal among both our local parishioners and our visitors and regular weekday congregations. Information and appeal leaflets will be available later in the Autumn, explaining the work and how it can be supported. To increase the value of direct financial contributions, we welcome the use of Gift Aid by those donors liable to pay UK Income and Capital Gains Tax, as well as fundraising ideas, if you are able to help, whether by direct donations or with fundraising, please contact Fr. David Barnes or members of the Parish Finance Committee.
