A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP VINCENT NICHOLS: As you know, Growing in Faith is an extraordinary initiative that will secure our Church for the future. It is thanks to your ongoing enthusiasm and efforts that we will be able to grow - our parishes, our priests and our ministry to the poor. Each week I am updated on the successes you are all having in your parishes. I would like to thank and congratulate those who have just finished the campaign. Your role as volunteers was pivotal to the success of Growing in Faith in your parishes and will provide those about to embark on the campaign with confidence to undertake it themselves. I encourage those of you who are in the final weeks of Growing in Faith to continue on and follow the example set by those before you to ensure a strong finish in your parish. You will see that the end point is very rewarding and worthwhile. In writing to you all. I am also very conscious of the leadership given by your parish priest. Thank you for supporting him in this difficult endeavour. The cooperation between you is a sign of the Church at its best. I wish you all a very happy and blessed Easter. Yours sincerely +Archbishop Vincent Nichols

GROWING IN FAITH UPDATE: When we began last year, eight parishes led the way. Since then a further 55 have joined and thirty more are expected to join after Easter. It is anticipated that all parishes will participate fully and on a set schedule by summer 2014. As a parish you responded with an open mind and heart and with a generosity that surpassed all expectations. As you know, Growing in Faith aims to support:
1. Parishes
2. Priests
3. Catholic Social Outreach
Already more than 500 volunteers from across the Diocese have given generously of their time and talents, 5,000 parishioners have pledged their support (with many of those being from your own parish) and we hope that tens of thousands are praying for Growing in Faith's success.
Parishes - are set to be the single largest beneficiary. They have seized the opportunity to undertake transformational projects. They have included employing Catechists. pastoral workers to work with the elderly or young families and even major capital projects which could not have been undertaken through regular parish income. A number of pilot parishes have already seen the first of their funds returned and have started their projects.
Our sick and retired clergy - the Diocese is currently looking after 101 sick and retired clergy and this number is rising steadily. Some are playing an active role in their parishes, while others are being supported as their health needs demand. Your pledge to Growing in Faith means we can fully care for our clergy. This is only right and just and we thank you sincerely for supporting this responsibility that we all share.
Vocations - we have been praying for vocations - now that we have them it is crucial we support them appropriately. We currently have 40 Seminarians in training and this June will see 8 men ordained, a record in recent years. Other projects include:
Catholic Social Outreach
A food bank / Catholic Churches of Borehamwood this foodbank supports 900 people with 21 volunteers.
Befriending the elderly and isolated
Healthy breakfasts: 250 eligible primary school children benefit from this project. Thank you for your generous support either in prayer, volunteering or financially making all this possible. We could not do it without you. Further details on noticeboard at the back of the church.
YEAR OF FAITH: As part of the Year of Faith which the Holy Father opened last October and will close on November 24th 2013, it was established that the faithful may gain a Plenary Indulgence by making a pilgrimage to a particular church in the Diocese designated by the local Bishop or by attending Mass at any Church on designated dates. PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH. Please remember that our Parish Church is one of the church's where plenary indulgence can be gained. Please see notice in foyer for further details.
WHAT IS A PLENARY INDULGENCE?
It is a very special way of experiencing the abundance of God's mercy and is also applicable to the souls of the deceased. It is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has been forgiven. (Paul VI Apostolic Constitution Indulgentarium Doctrina 19(7). The Church's doctrine and practice of indulgences has to be placed in the context of the Sacrament of Penance. Sin has a double conscquence:
When we commit mortal sin we break our communion with God and that deprives us of eternal life with Him. When we make our Confession and our sin is forgiven this eternal punishment is remitted and our relationship with God is restored.
When we commit mortal or venial sin there is also a consequence called temporal punishment. This is the temporal distancing of the soul from God under undue attachment to the things of earth. This punishment is removed by works of mercy and love, through prayer and penance. After death it is purified by the process we call purgatory.
In all this the Church calls us to personal conversion of mind and heart and of life.
HOW DO WE OBTAIN THE YEAR OF FAITH PLENARY INDULGENCE? First, in order to receive the gift of a Plenary Indulgence a person must be truly repentant of sin, have received the Sacrament of Penance and Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. Having fulfilled these conditions the Year of Faith indulgence is obtained:
By making a pilgrimage to one of the designated churches in the Diocese. During the pilgrimage the pilgrim should attend a Sacred Celebration or spend some time in prayer. The pilgrim should conclude the Visit by saying the Our Father, the Profession of Faith and the Hail Mary or another prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Designated churches are Westminster Cathedral and St Anselm & Cęcilia's. Please find the full list of other designated churches at the back of the church together with a list of specific feastdays. For those unable to make either of these pilgrimages for reasons of age or infirmity may gain the Plenary Indulgence at home. First, in order to receive the gift of a Plenary Indulgence a person must be truly repentant of sin, have received the Sacrament of Penance and Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. They should conclude by saying the Our Father, the Profession of Faith and the Hail Mary or another prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Full details will be listed on the diocesan website which will be updated throughout the Year of Faith.

STATEMENT BY ARCHBISHOP VINCENT NICHOLS AND ARCHBISHOP PETER SMITH ON THE GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO THE SAME SEX MARRIAGE CONSULTATION
The meaning or marriage matters. It derives that meaning from its function as the foundation or the family. The union of one man and one woman for love and mutual support and open to procreation has over the centuries formed a stable unit we call the family. Marriage is the enduring public recognition of this commitment and has been rightly recognised as unique and worthy of legal protection.
The government has chosen to ignore the views of over 600,000 people who signed a petition calling for the current definition of marriage to stay, and we are told legislation to change the definition of marriage will now come to Parliament.
We strongly oppose such a Bill. Furthermore, the process hy which this has happened can only be described as shambolic. There was no electoral mandate in any manifesto; no mention in the Queen's speech; no serious thorough consultation through a Green or white paper, and a constant shifting of policy even before Government response to the consultation was published today.
We urge everyone who cares about upholding the meaning of marriage in Civil law to make their views known to their MPs clearly, calmly and forcefully, and without impugning the motives of others. We urge all parties to ensure their Members have a free vote. It is not too late to stop this Bill.
CATHOLIC NEWSPAPERS: The Catholic Herald and the Universe will be on sale for the next three weeks to see what demand there is. You can buy them from the Repository at the weekends, and from the Sacristy before or after any Mass during the week.

Christmas cards, Calendars and diaries are now on sale. GIFT AID: In these times of rising costs, parish finances can be helped considerably by tax refunds obtained from HMRC through the Gift Aid scheme, by which anyone in the UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax can have their contributions to the Church enhanced by over 20%. Anyone using bank Standing Order or the Weekly Collection Envelopes is already likely to be registered for Gift Aid, but those putting cash into the collection at Mass can also help by using the special yellow envelopes at the back of the Church for even the smallest sum, thus adding value to any offering. Then using the envelopes it is essential to complete the name and address details on the front as requested. A big thank you to all our parishioners, those working locally and occasional visitors who have already been able to help in this way.
FROM THE PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE: As many parishioners will be aware, we are planning a major refurbishment of the Church interior, concentrating primarily on the Sanctuary. As the focus of our Mass celebrations and other liturgies, the Altar will be raised and enlarged, the Ambo (lectern), the seating in the Sanctuary as well as the Sanctuary floor will be replaced in stone compatible with the existing architecture of the Church. We will hopefully also be able to improve the appearance of the nave by removal of the carpets and restoration of the wooden areas of floor beneath them. There is no intention to make any other alterations to the appearance of the historic artwork or other aspects of the architecture of the Church. This will be the first major work within the Church itself since the repairs after the fire, and obviously requires significant amounts of financial support. Very roughly, the project is likely to cost some £150,000 if carried out soon, which is considerably more than the Parish has available in its reserves at present. To this end we intend to launch an appeal among both our local parishioners and our visitors and regular weekday congregations. Information and appeal leaflets will be available later in the Autumn, explaining the work and how it can be supported. To increase the value of direct financial contributions, we welcome the use of Gift Aid by those donors liable to pay UK Income and Capital Gains Tax, as well as fundraising ideas, if you are able to help, whether by direct donations or with fundraising, please contact Fr. David Barnes or members of the Parish Finance Committee.

PRIEST'S TRAINING FUND: Thank you for helping. This parish raised £1,292.37 and all of this money will be used to encourage vocations and to fund the training of men for the priesthood. More men are now training for the priesthood in our diocese than at any time for ten years and one of the key reasons is that we have used some of the money that you give us to increase the size and scope of the vocations team. This is the team that reaches out to those who believe God is calling them and it is now led by a full time priest, it has also produced a DVD, set up a website and developed new materials for parishes and schools... all of which is having a growing impact. Last year 12 men began their training for the priesthood at our seminary. But we can't relax as half our priests will retire over the next 20 years and expanding our work in this way has only been possible because of your help. So please go on supporting us - by giving as much as you can afford and with your prayers. http://www.rcdow.org.uk/donations

THE CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH (CDF) has improved the accessibility of its documents. A new domain (www.doctrinetfidei.ve) has now been added to the Vatican's website (www.vatican.va) to facilitate consultation of these documents.
We received recently a letter from Archbishop Vincent Nichols and Peter Smith on behalf of the Bishop's Conference of England and Wales. It is a statement of our Catholic faith about marriage and issued in the light of the forthcoming consultation by the Government on changing the legal definition of marriage. In the light of this letter, you are asked to consider signing the Coalition for marriage's online petition which can be found at www.C4M.org.uk It reads:
"I support the legal definition of marriage which is the voluntary union for life of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others. I oppose any attempt to redefine it."
The Archbishops also say that after Easter there will be a more detailed leaflet on the Government's consultation itself, for distribution in parishes, to assist Catholics in making their own response to the consultation.
