Archbishop Vincent Nichols will be installed as the new Archbishop of Westminster at a special Mass of Installation on Thursday 21 May 2009 at Westminster Cathedral.
The Mass will be preceded by a Service of Solemn Vespers at 7pm on Wednesday 20 May. The service will begin with the ceremony of Reception and Installation. At 12.00 noon, the main West Door of the Cathedral will open and the Archbishop will make his first solemn entry into his Cathedral, before processing to the sanctuary. The Chancellor of the Diocese of Westminster, Bishop John Arnold, will then read out the Apostolic Letter of Authority from Pope Benedict XVI, which denotes the official appointment of Archbishop Vincent Nichols as the 11th Archbishop of Westminster.
Together, around 4,000 people are expected to attend the Mass of Installation and the Service of Solemn Vespers. Guests will include Diocesan priests and religious, priests from the Archdiocese of Birmingham, as well as representatives from every parish and school throughout the Diocese A number of high profile guests are also expected to attend, including all of the Bishops of England and Wales, Catholic Peers and MPs, and Cardinal Mahoney, Archbishop of Los Angeles.
Canon Christopher Tuckwell, Administrator of Westminster Cathedral, said, “A time of change always brings challenges, but as we prepare for the celebration of the Installation of our new Archbishop, there is a great sense of expectancy and of excitement throughout the Cathedral. All the various Cathedral departments and offices have their own part to play and it is fascinating to watch the whole celebration come together. I am sure it will be a very happy and enjoyable day for us all.”
The Mass of Installation will be broadcast live on BBC 2 on Thursday 21 May from 11.45am.
