On Saturday, 3 March 2007, St Lawrence’s Church Feltham held an international evening in St Lawrence’s School Hall which was attended by over 70 people, writes John C Murphy. Visitors were asked to bring national dishes and wear national costumes.
Countries represented included Portugal, Japan, Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Ghana, Ireland, Poland and Nigeria, to mention but a few. Guests were invited to place markers on a world map showing where they came from. Not everybody did but, by the end of the evening, the only continent that appeared not to be represented was Australasia.
Many of those attending wore colourful national costumes and enjoyed the cuisine, music and dancing from many parts of the world. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. These days, there is much talk of celebrating diversity but this really happened at this event. This was the first such event we have held but I am sure that there will be more soon.
