Although the Roman Catholic Church does not belong to the World Council of Churches itself, it is actively engaged in extensive discussion and collaboration with other churches and communions which belong to it. Indeed it is a full, active member and partner with the World Council members of the Commission on Faith and Order.

Unity and Diversity: Can Catholics and different Christians be one?

In the past, diversity was understood more as something to be overcome rather than a main component of the engine towards unity. Nowadays, church leaders and ecumenical experts have been considering how we live in society and in the Church with the pluralism and diversity of modern times. Unity does not need to mean uniformity. Indeed unity, to embrace all, needs richness and variety.

What is Unity as Catholics understand it?

The Second Vatican Council’s Decree on Ecumenism 4 says that ecumenism is all “the initiatives and activities encouraged and organised according to various needs of the Church and as opportunities offer to promote church unity.” Our source of unity is “Jesus Christ … the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), Jesus in the power of the cross and the mystery of the resurrection, who unites us as one.
