A short history of Allen Hall
Allen Hall was founded in 1568 by Cardinal William Allen in Douai, Northern France, to provide priests for the English Mission during penal times. Many of its first students were martyred for the faith. In 1793 the college moved to Old Hall Green, near Ware in Hertfordshire, remaining there until 1975 when it transferred to Chelsea.

The Mission and Purpose of Allen Hall
Allen Hall is the seminary of the Westminster Archdiocese under the authority of the Archbishop of Westminster and welcomes seminarians from other Dioceses of England & Wales, both in England and Wales, and from abroad. It serves the mission of Christ and his Church by training men for priestly ministry. This training seeks the personal, spiritual and intellectual growth and development of the candidate as he discerns whether God, through the Church, is indeed calling him to priestly ministry.

The Formation of Students
Allen Hall, following the guidelines of Pastores Dabo Vobis, seeks the best human, spiritual, pastoral and intellectual formation of its students. The Formation Director, together with his team of Formation Advisors, is responsible for coordinating the formation and training of students.

Every student is assigned to a Formation Advisor who will accompany him on his journey towards priesthood. In dialogue with the student, the Formation Advisor will seek to develop fully the human potential and the gifts of the student in order that he might be best prepared for priestly ministry.

Every student is required to see a spiritual director regularly. In the initial period of formation this will be the College Spiritual Director. Later the student may choose, if he wishes, to see one of the external spiritual directors selected from the Colleges's approved list of spiritual directors.

During his training in Allen Hall every student is required to gain pastoral experiences in parishes, schools and hospitals and, if appropriate, in a more specialized placement such as a hospice or prison. The Pastoral Director will help the student to reflect on his pastoral experiences both individually and with others.

Allen Hall, in its intellectual formation of students, acknowledges the wide diversity of their age, culture, education and talent, and recognises the competencies and skills that they have already acquired in areas of study before entering formation. In dialogue with the student, it seeks to take these into account in drawing up the most appropriate academic programme for Him.

The Allen Hall Teaching Staff
Allen Hall seeks to teach competently the philosophical and theological subjects prescribed by Church authority. It is only able to do so with the generous assistance that the external teaching staff gives to Allen Hall. Their commitment to the intellectual formation of the students is essential and is much appreciated and valued.

The present Rector is Canon Paul McGinn. There are 5 men and women on the Formation Staff and another 26 on the Teaching Staff working with him.

The Catholic University of Leuven
Allen Hall is a theological institution affiliated to the Catholic University of Leuven and the Allen Hall theology course is validated by Leuven. Students who successfully complete all the requirements of the Leuven theology course are awarded the Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (STB), which is a canonical degree.
