An open evening for the Degree in Pastoral Mission at Heythrop College, University of London will be held on Wednesday 17 March 2010.

The Foundation Degree in Pastoral Mission is designed to give lay people knowledge, resources and skills to help them be of greater service to the local Church and her mission in the world.

Sixteen students, all of whom are actively involved in their parishes and schools, are currently engaged in this two-year programme (3 years part-time study) of work-based learning. While the programme has been developed with the Agency for Evangelisation of the Diocese of Westminster, the programme is open to applicants from neighbouring dioceses.

What does the programme cover?

The programme has academic, spiritual and pastoral elements. It provides a solid foundation in Catholic Theology which brings together theory and practice, with the aim that the theology studied can have direct practical benefits for evangelisation.   In addition to the weekly study session, delivered by Heythrop staff together with parish priests and diocesan employees, the student is assisted through regular meetings with a College-based programme tutor, a work-based mentor, and has the option of receiving regular spiritual direction or prayer guidance.

The open evening will begin at 6.30pm with refreshments and is open to anyone who may be considering further study and who is interested in developing the skills and knowledge needed to assist in the mission of the Church at parish level.

Work-based Learning

Foundation Degrees are designed around work-based learning to allow the student to undertake study around their work commitments, since those work activities  also contribute to the learning process.  As such it is essential that the student will already be active in either voluntary or paid work for the Church in a parish, school or elsewhere, before joining the programme.

What can the student go on to do?

The Foundation Degree in Pastoral Mission aims to prepare its students to extend and deepen their love and service of the Church as Catholic laypeople through a programme of work-based learning.  Some will already be pastoral assistants, catechists, teachers and administrators in the diocese, while some will be active volunteers. Successful completion of the Foundation Degree will also enable students to continue to complete an Honours Degree in Theology at the College in one further year of study.

What does it cost?

This programme has been developed to serve the Church, and is highly subsidised by the College and other agencies, therefore the fees are much lower than might be expected: only £500 per annum.
